Dear Spaz: Don’t Think; Don’t Ask; Don’t List; Don’t Tell

Dear Spaz,

I wanted to thank you and Matt for trying to putting a finer edge on the blunt position regarding gay rights.  Like Tony Messenger, I was getting confused.  As you know, the News-Leader screwed up an attribution in its Sept. 20 editorial about MSU’s updating its old anti-discrimination policy to now include sexual orientation.  The editorial incorrectly attributed to you a comment that was from Brett Shirk of the ACLU.  That comment was quoted in a July 19 Kansas City Star article about the state Department of Social Services discriminating against prospective foster parents who are gays and lesbians. Shirk had said that gays and lesbians should not be intentionally discriminated against solely due to their sexual orientation.  You and Matt, of course, had not stood up for the rights of individuals in either the case of state university policies or the state’s foster parent policies.

Spaz Presses Matters

Dear Spaz,

I must say I’m somewhat bewildered by your September 15, 2006 release of Matt’s statement http://www.gov.mo.gov/press/StatementMSU091506.htm)

Spaz's 35% Delusion

Dear Spaz:

I am so impressed by your consistency.  No, I’m not referring to your continued hold out as a member of Matt’s guber team.  Rather, I find it amazing that after all these months the Blunt administration continues to find ways to promote its contorted views on education.  Your August 21, 2006 editorial “Blunt Recognizes Missouri Teacher of the Year” could have been written as long ago as January.  In this release, you quote young Matt declaring that “The education of young Missourians is now the top priority of state government and my administration has been intently focused on getting dollars to classrooms like Mr. Thornton’s where they clearly do the most good.”

God Don't Want No Coalescing

Dear Spaz,

On January 23rd you issued a press release saying that Governor Blunt wasn't doing any private talking about selling MOHELA.  I guess they were so private you weren't invited.  Of course it could be that Blunt was just praying quietly about it so no one but God (the Christian one) was listening.  Well, God and Sallie Mae must have joined together on that one.  Perhaps that is an acceptable coalition in the view of our republican governor.  But I’m a bit confused.

Spaz on Blunt's Selective Service

Spence Jackson issued a press release for Veteran’s Day about Blunt assisting Veterans.

The Following is a Revised Release that is Closer to the Truth

Blunt Says His Administration to Remove Veterans From State Jobs and Programs

JEFFERSON CITY–Gov. Matt Blunt today announced that he is continuing his program designed to kick veterans out of state jobs and programs to force them to look for work outside of state government and to look for assistance from anyplace other than his administration's programs.

Spaz Returns from the Spiral Galaxy

Dear Spence:

I was thinkinbout your press release today about your boy’s proposal for a constitutional amendment to require that  65% of every education dollar be spent on direct instruction (including athletics, of course).  And I was trying to figure out where he got that idea and why 65% versus, say, 63% or 72%.  It took me a while to figure it out because my brain had been a bit fogged by your boy’s recent spending of the taxpayers' money on new fences for closed prisons, new roofs for buildings he wants to close, planes he won’t fly in, panic buttons for houses he doesn’t live in, and bibles whose second half he obviously doesn’t read.

Spaz and the Eskimo Chickens

Dear Spence:

I was thinkinbout Governor Mel Carnahan and his legacy of public service.  And I thought about how hard it must be for you and your boss to follow his example of always knowing at all times the most important areas on which to devote the resources of his office and the agencies of state government.  There are, of course, numerous examples of Mel taking command and leading us all with his vision, courage and strength, including his extraordinary leadership over the Guard and SEMA during the 1993 floods.  So I thought I’d go take a look at what you and the boy gov have been working on these last few days.

Spaz the Mushroom

Dear Spence,

I’ve been thinkinbout how hard it is going to be for you to write your normal 275 word press releases in the dark.  I don’t know how you are going to write words and sentences and string them coherently (or not) into paragraphs in an office with little illumination.  Assuming your office isn’t in the Senate storage area in the basement, I’d guess you’ve got some natural light coming in from either an outside facing window or one of those antique, high, hallway windows in the Capitol.  Or maybe you got a new ceiling light during the asbestos remodeling.  But anyway, you might have seen some light from above, until now.  Now you are really going to be left in the dark by your boss.

Here Come Da Spaz

Dear Spence,

You know, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to your future lately.  I’m worried that perhaps the young man you work for might decide you’ve given too much free publicity to “lib blogs” like Fired Up.  He might just up and decide it’s time for a change and, poof, you’re a goner.  You’re young too with a lot of opportunity (well at least some chance) ahead of you.  So you probably need professional advice, and, well, mine’s free, so here goes.

Spaz: Prepare for Reentry

Dear Spence,

I was thinking about how difficult it is going to be for you to reenter the community when you leave the blunt governor’s office.  But then I read your September 21, 2005 press release and learned that a program was already underway for which I’m certain you’ll qualify.

The title of that press release, you’ll recall, was “Governor Blunt Spotlights Missouri Reentry Program.”  Wow!  When I first read that headline, I was thrilled.  I grew up glued to the T.V. every time one of our spaceships, filled with our American astronauts, returned to earth to splash down in the ocean.  What a spectacular return for those heroes.  But alas, the program you spotlighted was one by the Missouri Department of Corrections to return offenders to the community after release from prison.

Matt Needs Spaz

Dear Spence,

You are probably on a little vacation needed for recovery after a tough week of vicious attacks from Fired Up bloggers.  But you need to return quickly because your boss needs you.  He seems to need more word choices and you, the pro communicator, can easily supply that need, I think.

You see, I needed to catch up on a little Fired Up reading and came across the following quote from your boy in a 9/26/2005 article in the Jeff City News Tribune about the needs of the Department of Conservation.  This article was about whether Conservation needed a new $2 million dollar plane or didn’t need one to fulfill its needs in serving the needs of the public while conserving our needed resources.

Dear Spaz

Dear Spence,

Please quit frightening Cole and Jefferson Thomas.  I know you sit at the knee of the nation’s 45th most popular governor, a man not easily alarmed even when faced with hordes of wild eyed wheel chair drivers, nor panicked by the prisoners in his own mansion, but that doesn’t give you the right to frighten these poor bloggers.  Sure, they think you’re nuts and your boss terribly slanted, but they shouldn’t have to live the rest of their lives hiding behind pseudonyms and under their beds.

Up to the Job

The manner in which Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s office conducted the recount of the Jefferson County state senate race shows that Secretary Carnahan is more than “up to the job.”  On May 6, Carnahan’s office announced that Republican Bill Alter received 72 votes more than his Democratic opponent, Rick Johnson.  Carnahan pledged during her campaign that she would keep the Secretary of State’s elections duties nonpartisan.  As chief elections officer, she said she would ensure integrity and fairness in the elections process.  Her first recount kept that pledge.

Waddell & Reed & Greed

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's office deserves major credit for focusing attention to and encouraging action on Waddell & Reed's alleged improper variable annuities transactions.  An agreement was announced by the National Association of Securities Dealers that calls for W& R to pay fines and restitutions totaling $18 million.

NASD had filed a complaint a last year that W&R customers had incurred $10 million in charges due to variable annuity switching.  In March, Carnahan's office suspended Waddell & Reed.  The Blunt administration's Department of Insurance intervened and questioned Carnahan's action.  W&R apparently decided settlement was in their best interest. (Check out who works for the W&R's attorney's.  Yup, the Blunt siblings are connected.)
