It’s Not Our Fault

The Case For Governor Kathleen Sebelius

As the date for selecting a running mate for the presumptive nominees approaches there have been many names thrown into contention for both candidates. While there have been many qualified names offered up for the Democrats and many people have their own personal favorites, I am no exception. According to conventional political wisdom the main purpose of the vice-presidential nominee is to bring unity to the party if there has been a fractious primary, or to bring geographical strength to an area where a candidate may be weak, or for gender, generational or ideological concerns. I believe that one of the top and best choices for Senator Obama’s selection as a running mate would be Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.

Baking For Obama Fundraiser

For the first time in my life I am planning to host a fundraiser for a political candidate.  I like many of us over the years have grown apathetic towards our political process in general and politicians in particular. However,  today I sense in a change in the political and social climate of our nation. I believe that we as a nation are at crossroads between continuing the policies that have led to the mess we currently find ourselves in and taking another road towards peace and tolerance.

Brooks to the Rescue of the Reagan Myth

It seems that pundit and Republican apologist David Brooks could not sit idly by and listen to the truth about his hero Ronald Reagan. Because of the recent talk surrounding the Reagan visit to Mississippi to kick-off his campaign and its racist overtones, Mr. Brooks is trying once again to write revisionist history concerning “The Gipper”. I wrote an essay detailing this phenomenon called “Revisionist History”, it seems the Republicans have to keep the image of Reagan as the populist hero because of the damage done by the Bush clan. It explains why all of the candidates are falling all over themselves to be the “next Reagan”. So, needless to say his image must not be tarnished by a small little detail like the truth.

Torture No Longer Taboo

As the Attorney General nominee was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was questioned repeatedly about the use of the technique known as waterboarding and whether he considered it legal. Judge Michael B. Mukasey, the nominee continued to avoid giving a legal opinion on the practice. According to legal experts, he had no choice but to avoid the rendering of an opinion because of the legal ramifications of the Attorney General calling the practice illegal. By doing so of course he would open the floodgates of litigation from detainees that have been subjected to the practice. For all practical purposes let’s acknowledge that this practice constitutes torture.  Story Continued »

The Great TIF Rip-Off

I recently saw the map of the TIF projects begun or proposed in Kansas City and I was frankly shocked. According to the chart I saw, east of Troost saw two TIF projects totaling 49 million dollars. They included 44 million for the Vine Street area and 4.8 million for 39th & Prospect area. The rest of the projects, which numbered 35 projects in Kansas City proper and totaled 5.5 billion dollars were located west of Troost. So lets’ go to the scorecards please, that is 49 million for the eastside(traditionally black) and 5.5 billion for the Westside (traditionally white), is it me or is there something wrong with this picture?

The Sin Is Pride

No More Chances Mr. Blunt

Even after receiving a second chance to support the nation’s uninsured children, Mr. Blunt chose to remain loyal to a President and a party that continues to ignore the health and welfare of our children. The time has come for all Missourians of good conscience to tell Mr. Blunt that if we can spend 500 billion dollars to prevent invisible weapons of mass destruction from being launched, we can certainly spend 35 billion to guarantee the health of our poorest children.
