I listened to Sarah Palin’s breathless Farewell Address set off by tweeting birds and cooing babies. I wish the speech had been set off by commas; I was exhausted by the pace.

What a slipshod affair it’s been between “Sparky” Sanford and his Argentine “soul mate.” This week the plot thickened in a chintzy Appalachian soap opera.

Blunt Crisis Management Strategy--Step One: LIE

Today, Governor Matt Blunt's Chief of Staff was called out by numerous citizen's groups for his outrageous statements at a recent MHDC meeting.

Outlining his strategy for how to determine if someone is an illegal immigrant--they look "Mexican," Martin had this to say:

I'll tell you what's available, is every frigging developer can figure
out who is illegal, and when he says -- like he told them -- there's a
bunch of Mexicans out there, I guess some of them are probably not
legal.

When reporters called to question Martin about his comments, Martin hid behind spokesman Jessica Robinson, who had this to say to the KC Star:

Martin was not immediately available for comment, but Jessica Robinson, a spokeswoman for Blunt, said Martin's comments were aimed at paraphrasing what a developer previously had said.

The problem?  That's a flat out lie.  There was plenty of discussion prior to Martin's comments about what the MHDC policy toward developers and illegal immigrants should be.  In fact, there was lots of discussion that the policy should be tough.

However, there was no comment that could possibly be paraphrased to conclude that the appropriate enforcement mechanism is to look at a group of workers and if some of them look Mexican, to assume that they are illegal immigrants.

The entire transcript of the meeting is attached.  Martin's comments are on page 126.  A careful reading of the preceding 125 pages reveals that Martin is flat out lying.

Does Matt Blunt have a shred of integrity?  We'll see.
