Who will replace disgraced GOP State Rep Nathan Cooper?

It has been two busy days for Democrats in Cape Girardeau County. We have been on the phone and exchanging emails with friends and collegues from all over the state and country. It is GOOD to be a Democrat in Cape Girardeau County now! There will be a special election and we need to move fast to find a candidate who can take this seat from the GOP. They have a big headstart....Nathan Cooper told Mary Kasten and others this was going to occur days and weeks before we knew. They have been hard at work recruiting candidates and raising money. We will need help from all districts but we might just be able to pull this off! Think about it...Rush Limbaugh's home district going Blue....that is the stuff of dreams! I want you all to know we are busy working to "Turn MO Blue" especially in Cape County. Have a great day....we are in Cape Co! Cyndi

Mary Kasten will run for 158th seat...again.

After digging through the Southeast Missourian today I found the article on the GOP choice for the 158th on page 3A. Mary Kasten, who held the seat for 7 terms, will be running again. Mrs Kasten, as some of you will remember, was disgraced Rep. Nathan Cooper's mentor. Cooper lived with the Kastens' and took up the seat when Dr. Kasten's health was failing and Mrs. Kasten decided not to run. Mrs. Kasten is 79 years old and lives in a retirement community. I am sure the woman is a lovely lady but why is she running? Were none of the other Republicans in Cape Girardeau qualified? Or are they afraid the Democrats will win? Mike Keefe will is a fine candidate and will be a great Representative for the 158th! Cyndi

CAPE AREA DEMOCRATIC MEETUP PARTY IN THE PARK

The Cape Area Democratic MeetUp Party in the Park will be held one week from today-- at noon on September 22 at Cape County Park South Shelter #20. Many local and State level candidates are coming...more info later this week. The cost is $10; children under 12 and students at area colleges get in free (must show IDs). We will be serving Fried Fish, Hot dogs, Hamburgers and all the trimmings. The theme this year is a salute to our Veterans. Our honored guests will come from the local Veteran's home. There will be a memorial gift from the Cape County Democrats to the Veteran's Home in Bobby Miller's name. This is our 3rd annual event and my 1st as the new organizer, Brenda (Louise) Stroder is coorganizer of the group. Amanda Becker moved to Indianapolis and left big shoes to fill...come help us celebrate the valiant efforts of our Veterans and thank them for their service to our great country! Cyndi

Mike Keefe former postmaster is Dem candidate for 158th

Mike Keefe, who was Postmaster in Cape Girardeau for over 20 years, was chosen as the Democratic Candidate by the 158th Legislative District Committee last night. The special election will be held February 5th to replace former GOP State Rep Nathan Cooper. Cooper resigned in disgrace after pleading guilty to two felonies involving an illegal immigration scheme. Mike Keefe is a great candidate and we need support and $$ from anyone who cares about the Great State of MO! This is a winnable seat...the GOP is scared and telling everyone that a Democrat can't win...let's prove them wrong! Mike Keefe's email address is keefeforhouse@gmail.com Thanks, Cyndi

During the August 18th meetings in Jeff City...Cape Co rocked!

We had several people from Cape Girardeau County show up at the State Democratic meetings held at the Truman Convention Center in JC on August 18th. When I handed my card (I am the organizer of the Cape Girardeau Area Democratic MeetUp)to a candidate's assistant he asked how many people were from Cape! We had even more from the 8th district. We will be having the MO Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs State Convention in 2008 in Cape County. We are energized and ready to work for our Democratic Candidates. We may be overcompensating since we are the home of the Limbaughs, Peter Kinder and Nathan Cooper. Watch out for us we are ready to "Turn MO Blue!" Cyndi

Candidates ignoring Cape Co?

After so many of us from the 8th district showed up at the Mo Dems meetings in Jeff City you would think the candidates would take notice. NOT! We have had and are having several events in the 8th district and I am taking notes of the candidates who grace us with their presence. Sure we love Jon Hagler...but he isn't Jay Nixon! Some of us worked our butts off to help get Sen. McCaskill elected and we will help other candidates with as much determination and enthusiasm as possible! Mike Evans, candidate for Lt. Governor, has been to SEMO so many times he seems like family. We will remember him attending events and calling us when we get in the voting booth. He is the ONLY candidate who has been here to visit us...we are grassroots level.(Small money but hard workers) Take note you may be able to raise big bucks without us but we have a great base of people who want to make big changes in the region. I didn't have big bucks to give to the Party in the 2006 election but I volunteered 30+ hours/week and by my estimates (even at $5/hr) it equaled a rather hefty donation. The air is electric with excitement and possibilities for the special election (to replace Nathan Cooper) AND the 2008 election! Please don't ignore us! Cyndi

Thursday- Dems will choose candidate for special election!

Thursday night, September 6, the 158th District committee will choose the candidate for the February 5th special election. After the candidate is chosen we will have to spend a great deal of time, $$ and effort to reclaim the seat. I'll keep you informed. Cyndi

Cape Area Democratic MeetUp- October 10th

Last night the Cape Area Democratic MeetUp was host to Representative Steve Hodges of the 161st District; Candidate for the 156th, Michael Winder and Mike Keefe, Candidate for the 158th( disgraced GOP Nathan Cooper's old seat). The room was packed with Democrats. We are excited here in SEMO. Rep. Hodges' win in '06 proved with determination and hard work we can prevail. Rep. Hodges shared with us some experiences as a new Representative. Rep. Hodges was honored by his fellow newcomers as President of the Freshman Class. We are truly honored to have a man like Rep. Steve Hodges serve us in the General Assembly. Mike Keefe spoke with us about his positions. He is enthusiastic and ready to do what it takes to wrest this seat from the GOP. We don't have much time before the Feb. 5th special election so will will have to get busy raising money and campaigning. Any and all help will be appreciated. Michael Winder, who is running for Rod Jetton's seat(Jetton will be term limited out), made a few remarks. Mike made a great showing last year against the Speaker of the House. We are ready to do whatever it takes to "Turn MO Blue". Cyndi
