Republican Corruption

Another Southeast Missouri Republican With Troubles

Documentation of a tax lien for unpaid Federal taxes against elected republican and Stoddard county prosecutor Russ Oliver and his wife was released recently. Unpaid Federal taxes for 2008 amounted to $7,281.35 dollars and $8,754.85 dollars for 2009.
Oliver was elected prosecutor in Stoddard county in 2010 after a great deal of support by Butler county politicians who have decided to expand their control of the Southeast Missouri region. Oliver excused his failure to pay his taxes by saying that he sacrificed a lot to run for office and that his failure to pay his taxes is a result of that sacrifice. I did not realize that avoiding taxes while seeking to be paid by tax payers was considered a sacrifice.
Republicans excusing themselves from paying taxes, court costs, fines, working for the good of the community instead of a few insiders, following the law, following acceptable business practices, and more, seems to be a common theme here in Butler county as well as in the surrounding region. Rules, laws, ethics, and standard human decency are for other people.
Should I mention the republican Lieutenant Governor who used to be from Southeast Missouri and his charging the taxpayers for his hotel rooms even when the hotel rooms were for reasons not related to his official duties?

I do not know how a failure to pay taxes for 2008 and 2009 shows that Oliver was working hard to serve his constituents. He also claims that this will not keep him from doing his job as the county prosecutor.

OpenSecrets: Blunt "Reaped Financial Rewards From Disgraced Lobbyist Jack Abramoff"

A new blog post from the Center for Responsive Politics breaks down the "financial rewards" Roy Blunt received from convicted felon Jack Abramoff, and describes Blunt as one of the "top beneficiaries" of Casino Jack's largesse.

  • House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who took $9,000 directly from the Abramoffs

  • Blunt, who accepted $8,500

Groundhog Days Gone By: GOP Sees Shadows of Delay and Abramoff, Rejects Blunt's Bid to Be Majority Leader

Four years ago today, Republicans in the House of Representatives chose a new Majority Leader to replace indicted Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX).  Rep. Roy Blunt, DeLay's hand-picked lieutenant, was expected to fill the slot, and Blunt had publicly predicted an outright win in the three man race.

Blunt won a plurality of the votes in the first ballot against Reps. John Boehner (R-OH) and John Shadegg (R-AZ) -- but came 6 votes shy of receiving a majority.  Shadegg came in third, and dropped out for the second ballot.  His support swung to Boehner, and Blunt was defeated on the second go-round by a 122-109 vote.

The rejection of Blunt's bid to be Majority Leader was a clear repudiation of the Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff legacy, to which Blunt was and is inextricably linked.

What's the difference?

Gary Reed Blankenship goes to prison and Eric Feltner gets a light sentence for trying to entice an underage girl online.  Same crime but the two cases are handled differently.  I am sure there are some individual differences between the two cases; however, it seems odd the two cases were handled so differently from the investigation to the indictment, to the sentence.

The difference is what?
a. Feltner was close to Peter Kinder
b. The judge for Feltner was lenient
c. The Republicans pulled strings behind the scene tried to get Feltner a light sentence for some reason
d. All of the above
