Cynthia Blocks Child Protection Bill Because It Doesn't Have Anything To Do With Abortion

Too often, the antics of Rep. Cynthia Davis (R-O'Fallon) are dismissed on the assumption that she's just a crazy person, and doesn't actually have any power. Those assumptions are wrong. Davis is the chair of the House Children and Families committee, and refuses to hear legislation pertaining to children and families.

Amanda Thrasher came to Jefferson City from Desloge to demand action on a bill, informally known as “Sam’s Law” that would strengthen protections for children in non-licensed daycare facilities...

Rep. Linda Fischer, D-Bonne Terre, sponsored the legislation, but the bill has stalled in the House Children and Families committee, chaired by Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O’Fallon.

Davis says she might get around to it, but says Fischer and advocates shouldn't get their hopes up.  Why?  Because it doesn't have anything to do with abortion.

Davis also said her committee’s main purpose is to deal with abortion issues and that Sam’s Law might have been better off if it had been referred to a judiciary committee.

Silly me. I thought the Judiciary Committee dealt with judiciary issues, and the Children and Families Committee would deal with children's issues.

Either way, it's a shame that Davis is so devoted to proving she's the most extreme candidate in her bid to unseat Sen. Scott Rupp (R-Wentzville) that she can't schedule a hearing on legislation that could improve the lives of children.
