Hans: Still Hacking Away
Long-time Fired Up! readers may have noticed a familiar face this week, as Hans von Spakovsky has received a little play on FOX News and in the pages of the right-wing Wall Street Journal opinion pages. We don't hear from Hans so often anymore, but when we do, it's always an adventure in creative story telling and partisan hackery.
Von Spakovsky, you'll recall, was "a key player in a Republican campaign to hang onto power in Washington by suppressing the votes of minority voters," and played a prominent role in the bogus DOJ lawsuit against SOS Robin Carnahan that was tossed out of court for being without merit.
Hans has a long resume of promoting "partisan political interests" and fabricating evidence to further his political goals, summed up well here:
The bottom line is this: during his disgraceful tenure at DOJ, Spakovsky routinely approved state voting practices that were later struck down by federal courts. He manipulated election law to benefit Republican candidates; he retaliated against career attorneys who stood in the way of his illegal efforts; and he even gave cash awards to career attorneys who towed the party line. Now that he is powerless, he is continuing his anti-voter crusade from the pages of the Wall Street Journal.
Fortunately, Von Spakovsky's dirty tricks finally caught up with him in 2008, when he was forced to withdraw himself from consideration for the Federal Election Commission. Sadly, though, he'll always have a soft place to land with his fellow zealots in the Wall Street Journal's editorial shop.
