Hartzler Spox: Our Attack Was Lame And Confusing, But In A Good Way!

This is an interesting damage control tactic for campaign spokespersons.  Admit that your boss looked silly, but also criticize your opponent for being confused by your candidate’s dumb comment.

That’s the spin by Vicky Hartlzer spokesperson Steve Walsh in response to questions about Hartlzer’s bizarre complaint that “we [Missouri] have the smallest navy here that we have had since the early 1960s.”  Understandably, Ike Skelton was confused by this attempt to make it seem like he’s been a lousy Ranking Member and Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. But Walsh takes comfort in Skelton's confusion, and complains that KSHB's Chris Hernandez unfairly asked Skelton to respond to Hartler's concerns regarding Missouri's small naval presence.

From the Pulaski County Daily:

A recent television interview with congressional candidate Vicky Hartzler by a Kansas City-area television station has led some to question how much Hartzler knows about the military, but campaign spokesman Steve Walsh says the interview put both Hartzler and incumbent U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton in a bad light.

“Let’s face it; neither of them came off well,” Walsh said. “The impression you get from watching the Channel 41 report is Vicky Hartzler is suggesting that Missouri somewhere has a naval base, and that is, of course, ridiculous. She is fully aware there is no naval base at Lake of the Ozarks or anywhere else in the state.” [...]

“I think we have a bit of a problem with the Channel 41 interview; it seems as if there might have been a bit of a problem with the editing or maybe the reporter may have been a bit rushed,” Walsh said. “The reporter’s story does not make either of the candidates look good.”

Yes, “let’s face it.” Vicky Hartzler tried -- and failed -- to suggest that Skelton has been a lousy advocate for the military as the House Armed Services Chairman.  Or maybe she has a super-awesome plan to beef up the Show-Me State Navy?
