JOBS: Regional Ballot Initiative Organizers
Salary: $800/week, mileage reimbursed
Temporary, full-time November 2011 through 1st week of May 2012
The Position: Regional Ballot Initiative Organizer
Regional Ballot Initiative Organizers, will work closely with a statewide campaign director, local JwJ Organizing staff and Leadership Teams to recruit and deploy volunteer signature gatherers to qualify two pro-working families initiatives for the November 2012 ballot – Payday Lending Reform and Increasing the Minimum Wage. The work will include very significant evening and weekend hours attending membership meetings and deploying volunteer signature gatherers. We will be hiring the following two regional positions:
St Louis region
Kansas City region
Responsibilities:
Coordination with Member/Ally Organizations: Organizer will coordinate with member and ally organizations to line up engagements for speakers at membership meetings to recruit volunteer signature gatherers. This will include meetings almost every day of the month, and often multiple meetings in the same day.
Recruitment and Training of Volunteers: Organizer will train volunteers both at standing meetings and by setting up additional trainings outside of standing meetings.
Volunteer follow up: Organizer will do regular follow up calls to all volunteer signature gatherers to check in on their progress and arrange for times they can turn in their sheets to notaries ongoing.
Volunteer mobilization: Organizer will also arrange more formal mobilizations where volunteers gather in one place and are deployed to high traffic areas to canvass for signatures.
Tracking and reporting: Organizer will track and report several times a week on the running total of signatures turned in for their region.
Qualifications
Solid commitment to the principles of social and economic justice.
Own vehicle available for work (mileage is reimbursed).
Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
Ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently toward agreed upon goals.
A strong ability to motivate people, coordinate volunteer activity and delegate responsibility.
Should be willing and able to become a notary public to notarize completed petitions
Proficient in computer skills, including word processing and excel.
Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of organizations and people.
An understanding of the labor movement, religious organizations and other social movements.
Also Desired: Experience working on ballot initiative campaigns; Knowledge of and/or participation in Jobs with Justice in Missouri or elsewhere in the country.
