Luetkemeyer: Kit Bond is "endangering the lives of our troops"

My brain is having a hard time processing the competing press releases from Sen. Kit Bond and Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer regarding this week's war spending bill.

As you may already know, Congressional Republicans chose to vote en masse against the bill because of a small provision concerning IMF funding. The decision to oppose the crucial spending bill was especially hypocritical for George W. Bush's top Congressional leaders (e.g. Roy Blunt) who decried any opposition to Bush's supplemental bills with language like, "the equivalent of waving a white flag to al Qaeda."

But Republicans in the Senate didn't have much of a problem with the legislation -- only three voted to oppose the bill. In fact, Kit Bond's press release about the bill is headlined, "BOND: VICTORY!" (yes, all caps) and praised the inclusion $2.2 billion for C-17s he says will save 1,800 jobs in Missouri.

The reaction from Reps. Blaine Luetkemeyer and Roy Blunt was markedly more concerned about the future of All Things American. Here's what he had to say:

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) today voted against an appropriations bill originally intended to fund ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan but which instead became so politicized that it will actually weaken our national security, further endanger the lives of our troops, and allow the majority to continue its reckless spending spree...

Also of great concern is that the supplemental spending bill has also removed an amendment prohibiting dangerous terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay from being transferred to the U.S. This legislation now allows terrorists being held at Guantanamo Bay to be brought into the U.S.

Roy Blunt had a different take. In his eyes, the bill was "about bailing out foreign countries" and designed to provide the librul Barack Obama with "an easy way to push a global bailout."

It's the same piece of legislation (HR 2346).  Kit Bond calls it "Victory!"  Blaine Luetkemeyer says "it will actually weaken our national security [and] further endanger the lives of our troops." Roy Blunt says Bond wants to bail out foreign countries Oh, and Kit Bond now wants Guantanamo Bay prisoners in the United States.

Who knew?

Bond Looks Insipid in White

I've seen Kit Bond wrap himself in the American flag many times before, but this is the first time he's wrapped himself in a white flag.  Not your color, Kit.

New Blaine Buzz

You've got to admire his sticktoitiveness, if not the execution.

Blaine, Did You Take a Dip?

This week's video grade, Blaine, reflects some slight improvement: B- for Delivery and D- for Content.

Oh, how I loved the poolside feeling! The wind in your hair and the water in the background give a relaxed--almost beachy look--which you cleverly tried to mask by wearing a shirt and tie.  Next time, Blaine, wear your Aloha shirt with the big palm leaves.  And as you leave, kick some sand in in the face of the wino laying next to the pool while telling him to find a job.  If you can find a job, so can he.

Kudos to the staffer with the i-pod camera for keeping your hands from waving into the screen, except for those push-offs at the beginning and end.

And lastly, though it saves you a trip home, no one wants to see a twenty-some year old staffer.  If you can't find time to talk to the people back home yourself, don't send a surrogate.   We know your heart's at the beach.  You rascal.
