Ed Martin announced today that his Congressional campaign has been endorsed by Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Why would anyone in Missouri's Third Congressional District care what an Arizona sheriff thinks? Presumably, Martin believes that associating himself with Arpaio's "long and well-documented trail of inmate abuses, unjustified arrests, racial profiling, brutal and inept policing and wasteful spending" is a good thing.
The two also have more in common than you might think.
- Arpaio is currently involved in a dispute stemming from his refusal to release government records. Martin knows a thing or two about a disputes involving public records.
- As noted over at Show Me Progress, the FBI has reportedly probed into Arpaio's office for allegedly using his authority to retaliate against political adversaries. Martin "orchestrated a taxpayer-funded character assassination unlike anything ever seen before in Missouri government."
- Arpaio's actions have led to numerous lawsuits costing taxpayers a lot of money. Martin would rather you forget about how costly his poor leadership was to taxpayers, and how much his frivolous lawsuits have cost taxpayers.
Sheriff Joe is quite a guy -- congrats on the big catch, Ed!
