Sinquefield Sales Tax Proposals Hit From All Sides

In a new editorial for the Columbia Daily Tribune, self-professed "fair tax" supporter Henry J. Waters III writes that Rex Sinquefield's sales tax hike proposals are bad news.  Waters writes at length about how much he likes the idea of a federal sales tax (and never manages to type Daddy Rex's name), but nevertheless concludes that a big sales tax in Missouri wouldn't work:

...This is a great idea on paper, a proposition I have in the past dreamily supported in this column. I still would be enthusiastic if the new tax could be implemented as theoretically imagined, but no such thing is about to happen, and the resultant adversities, alas, are enough to sink the idea...

We already have seen Missouri lawmakers push misbegotten sales tax exemptions for food and school supplies and the environment. This sort of ruination would be even more rampant if a reformed sales tax system were as broadly based as necessary to achieve anything like the promise of fair tax advocates....
