Well, Of Course There's A Swift-Boater Speaking At Today's "Scientists for Truth" Conference

"Scientists for Truth" kicks off their global warming denying conference in Springfield today, with what's sure to be an enlightening discussion.

One of the key speakers at the event to take on "climate change myths" is Marc Morano. Believe it or not, Morano was actually the first to publish unfounded claims from Vietnam Swift-boat veterans about John Kerry's military service in 2004.  Morano was also "previously known as Rush Limbaugh’s “Man in Washington” as reporter and producer for the Rush Limbaugh Television Show."

What, you thought the "Scientists for Truth" panelists would be interested in truth?  Or truthiness?

Morano's Drudge-like ClimateDepot.com is financed by the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, which has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the ExxonMobil Foundation and from foundations associated with the billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, a longtime contributor to conservative causes.

Climate Change Deniers Ignore Scientific Consensus

As Scientists for Truth meet in Springfield today to deny the existence of global warming, the bulk of the scientific community agrees that climate change is a real and present threat which must be addressed.  The panel assembled by Scientists for Truth for their conference today – which contains a political operative responsible for propagating the Swift Boat propaganda of the 2004 election, a mathematician, and a partisan policy wonk – is long on conjecture and short on actual scientific credentials.

Respected scientific bodies such as the Nobel Prize winning International Panel on Climate Change, the National Research Council, and the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, all agree that greenhouse gas pollution emitted from human sources is the likeliest cause of climate change.  A recent report from the Union of Concerned Scientists found that if climate change goes unabated, Missouri could face frequent heat waves of “historic proportions,” increased rainfall during flood seasons, and changes in weather that could have a debilitating effect on agriculture.

Meanwhile, common sense solutions for reducing global warming – such as increased reliance on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency measures, and a cap on carbon dioxide emissions – not only address a clear threat, but create new jobs, increase national security by reducing dependence on foreign oil, and protect consumers from the price spikes which result from reliance on fossil fuels.

For comment from a local Springfield scientist who can speak at length on the severe negative impact posed by climate change, please contact Dr. Alexander Wait, professor of biology at Missouri State University.  Dr. Wait may be reached by calling (417) 773-9740.
