What, exactly, is Kit Bond afraid of?

It's probably a silly exercise to try to understand the logic of Sen. Kit Bond's defense of Bush Administration policies, but his pathetic fearmongering about the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention center is about as ridiculous as it gets.

"Whether these terrorists are coming to the prison in nearby Kansas or a halfway house in a city in Missouri or any other state, I can tell you this: Americans don't want these terrorists in their neighborhoods," Bond said.

Seriously?  Halfway houses?  Terrorists in their neighborhoods?

If Kit Bond is honestly concerned about the ability of federal prisons to keep terrorists, rapists, murderers and any other violent people behind bars, then he should do something about it.  I think the public would be interested in information regarding the imminent and ongoing danger of federal inmates.

Otherwise, I wish he'd just stop.

UPDATE: Roy Blunt also thinks the fearmongering strategy is a winner
