Justice Deferred: Cooper Gets Sweetheart Deal in Sentencing
Rudi Keller follows up this morning's story with the news that Nathan Cooper has been sentenced to a mere 15 months in prison.
Looks like Cooper's compilation of entreaties for leniency from some 32 unnamed friends and allies was a successful ploy since he received a sentence half as short as the best case (for Cooper) scenario anticipated by even his own defense attorney. Keller's earlier story included this bit:
...assistant federal prosecutor Jim Crowe and Cooper's attorney, Joel
Schwartz, both said that under federal sentencing guidelines, Cooper is
likely to receive 30 to 37 months in prison.
I think we can all comfortably call this an utter travesty and a miscarriage of justice now.
ÂGiven the successful campaign by Cooper and his attorneys to get allies to weigh in with the judge prior to sentencing I believe it is now absolutely critical that the public learn who exactly had letters included in Cooper's filing with Judge Hamilton.
If there are Republican elected officials or powerbrokers among those who prevailed upon Cooper's judge for leniency in sentencing it's imperative that we know who they are so that they are never, ever again allowed to campaign by demagoguing the issue of illegal immigration. Anyone who encouraged lenient treatment for Cooper --an admitted facilitator of illegal ingress for dozens of foreigners-- obviously has nothing but contempt for the enforcement of our nation's laws on immigration. The press should insist --and Cooper's legal team should post no challenge-- that the letters submitted by Cooper by immediately unsealed and made a part of the public record of Cooper's case.
I'm sickened by this entire affair. What an utter joke.

Governor Blunt should stand against illegal immigration
Governor Blunt should stand up against those who bring illegal immigrants into Missouri. I have been told those coyotes who facilitate the entrance of illegal immigrants are the worst sort of people. Cooper must be tried on the state laws he violated. Blunt needs to prove he is against illegal immigration rather being merely a fountain of meaningless rhetoric in a cynical attempt to hoodwink the voters. Blunt/Kinder/Jetton/Emerson need to tell the voters if they asked the judge for leniency. The voters deserve to know!
