State Senator Brad Lager, a Republican vying for his party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor, spoke a rare truth about his party Friday morning. During an interview on the McGraw Milhaven show on KTRS, Lager criticized his own party for failing to keep campaign promises stating the following:
The reality is, is that, you know, when you are running for office you say all these wonderful things about less government, and cut the budget and making it live within it means all these things that we actually believe. And then you get to Jefferson City and everyday there is some special interest beating on your door telling you how important their program is and oh my gosh if you don’t fund this program the world’s coming to an end.
In the reality, it’s because the last round of term limits we actually have more people in the building now that have not lived through the tough decisions that we had, like back in 2005, when Matt Blunt was the governor and we made the changes to Medicaid and what ends up happening is unfortunately people do not want to make the tough decisions necessary.
To understand that, you can’t keep doing everything we have been doing because the revenue is simply not there. I am a guy who believes that government is doing 100 things 80 percent right and we’ve got to figure out what 80 things we want to do 100 percent right.
