SE Missourians 100-1 Against Bush's Social Security Privatization Scheme

Here's what Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Washington, D.C.) has to say about her constituents views on privatizing Social Security:

A Republican congresswoman also said her constituents appear opposed to the accounts idea. "My mail's probably going 100-to-1 against privatization," Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., told Congressional Quarterly.

Social Security Townhall Meeting Tomorrow

Just a few lines to let you know how we are progressing in our plans for Saturday's Town Hall Meeting. KFVS, KAIT, DAILY DUNKLIN DEMOCRAT, KBOA, AND OTHER MEDIA SOURCES WILL BE there.

Social Security Townhall Meeting

Featuring:

US Representative Joanne Emerson, CD 8

Since January, Missourians all over the 8th Congressional District have asked Rep. Emerson for her position on Social Security privatization.

Thanks to you and dozens of phone calls from constituents,

Emerson has agreed to attend an open public meeting

to share her position on this issue with voters in CD 8.

Be there to watch Rep. Emerson take a public stand on Social Security!

Sponsored by Missourians United to Protect Social Security & Missouri Pro-Vote.

Questions or concerns please contact Margarida Jorge or Joanne Bennett at 314-531-2288 or

moprovote@mindspring.com.

Rep. Otto Bean was notified, but heard he
might not be able to attend due to other commitments
and health. Yet, we wanted to make him aware of it.
Terry Swinger will definitely be there. Things are
moving right along. We  hope to see everyone from all 7 counties.

People from Washington are flying in for this event because Ms.
Emerson is the first U.S. legislator to commit to a town hall meeting on Social Security, so the capitol is abuzz with the news. This event will be closely watched. Ms. Emerson has told the Congressional Quarterly that the calls and emails she has received are running 100 to 1 against privatization of Social Security. So, we cannot sing enough praises to those who responded to the call to get involved and let our voices be heard. It has been successful and will continue to be if we now heed the call to be in attendance. Once again, pass it along.

Town Hall

I was present at the meeting. It is very clear that Privatization is not the answer to our Social Security issue. Furthermore, in our district, workers want the rich to share in the taxes--$90,000--cut off should be reviewed. We should not privatize Social Security as this is very risky and causes great concern. US Representative JoAnne Emerson indicated most of the constituants that have written were against contracting out. We must all join together and stand firm on this issue. Today, I visited workers in Washington County. We had a discussion on the concerns of Social Security--these workers were under the age of 55. They expressed the serious plan of privatization of Social Security and their fears of young folks not putting anything into their savings. However, in my conversation, the state of Social Security is not known or discussed by the average worker and I believe that we must educate to make changes.

8th District Legislators MIA

Rep. Emerson says her constituents are 100-1 against Bush's privatization scheme.  Interesting.

Rep. Clint Zweifel sponsored HCR14, a resolution which conveyed opposition to Bush's ill-conceived Social Security privatization scheme.

Republican leadership bottled this resolution up in committee.  58 members of the General Assembly signed a discharge petition (scroll to nearly the bottom), to force the Republican leadership to allow the resolution to the floor for consideration.

Despite the fact that their constituents views run 100-1 in favor of the resolution and against Bush's scheme, Rep. J.C. Kuessner and Rep. Terry Swinger, both Democrats, were the only legislators in the entire 8th district with the wisdom and courage to sign the discharge petition.

I suppose the rest of the legislators in the 8th district care more about covering for Bush, than they do their constituents.  Congrats to Rep. Kuessner and Rep. Swinger, and shame on the rest.

HCR14-discharge petition

Roy...I notice that Terry Swinger (162) also signed the petition from the 8th CD.

Good catch, Jeff

Good catch, Jeff.  The post is now corrected.  With apologies and thanks to Rep. Swinger.  Kudos for doing the right thing.
