Blunt Auctions Off State Contracts Through the Republican Governor's Association?

Today, Governor Blunt unveiled purported cost savings from the outsourcing of jobs for state building maintenance.

But I bet he didn’t tell the press the rest of the story.

The outsourcing contract was awarded to Johnson Controls, Inc. of Milwaukee, WI. (Click Read More)

Johnson Controls is a favorite of the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA). Between January 2003 and March 2004, Johnson Controls gave over $81,000 to the RGA.  It even sponsors a government building energy efficiency award for the RGA.

In 2004, the RGA gave nearly $2.6 million dollars to Matt Blunt’s gubernatorial campaign.

And Blunt apparently returned the favor to Johnson Controls.  He recently awarded them two state contracts (1 & 2) worth over $3.25 million.  Inexplicably, no mention is made of Johnson Controls in the Governor’s press release.

Also, no word on when Governor Blunt will receive his efficiency award from Johnson Controls.

On the heals of awarding two lucrative government contracts to Republican Governors Association (RGA) donor, Johnson Controls, Blunt is on his way to Texas to meet with.... RGA Donors.

Blunt Misleads Press on Privatization Cost Savings

Blunt's press release talks about cost savings through private contracting in St. Louis, KC, Springfield and St. Joseph.

Yet, the bid for the St. Joseph and Kansas City building maintenance outsourcing was cancelled on May 31st.  The cancellation announcement states that state workers will continue to perform facility management services in-house.

As is their custom, the Blunt Administration has once again misled the press and public.

Memo to file: Watch for the Blunt Administration to give Johnson Controls another shot at the KC and St. Joe contracts after the heat fades.  By pulling the contract from public bid, they prevented another company, Meridian Management Corporation, from having a shot at the contract.

Outsourcing state jobs

There is something terribly deceptive about Gov. Blunt's press release citing a savings of $1.6 million dollars by privatizing janitorial and security jobs.  Let's say each of the 68 state jobs eliminated saves the state $50,000 in salary and benefits (highly unlikely).  That leaves over $1 million for supplies and administrative costs.  Give me a break!  I'd like to know how Blunt came up with those figures.

Imagine what's in store for state jobs and service recipients when Blunt's Government Reform Commission releases its findings and the governor starts manipulating that data.

privatizing state jobs

actually, it's just 57 jobs now since they didn't let a couple of the contracts, but they claim they will save the entire 1.6 million anyway! that figures out to over $80,000 per job. for janitors and security guards?? i called the jeff city news tribune and asked about the accuracy of all this, and was told it was an ap story and the author depended on the integrity of the governors spokesperson regarding accuracy. outstanding journalism!!!
