Graves: "Return the Money? But I've Already Done the Work."

The AP had a story yesterday about Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) refusing to return a contribution from Westar executives, despite the fact that Westar has publicly acknowledged that they were attempting to buy influence with the money.

I am sure Graves doesn't see why he should return the money when he has already done the work for Westar.  During his early days in Congress, Graves served as Westar's personal Congressional handmaiden.

Graves, along with Roy Blunt (R-K Street) were the leading advocates for a special provision benefitting only Westar.

AP:

Graves, R-Mo., received the $1,000 contribution from the Topeka, Kan.-based utility in June 2002, as its executives were trying to influence Congress for a favorable energy policy.

The policy in question, was the one being handled by Graves and Blunt.  That is, until Westar starting being investigated by the Feds, at which time Graves and Blunt quietly slinked off into the night.  However, they kept the money.
