 ‘Madame president’ closer to reality?

A recent USA Today cover story tapped a politician from Kansas, and another from Missouri, as future potential contenders for national office, including the presidency.

That’s not unusual.

The fact that they’re both women is.

Whether Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius or Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan ever could be elected president remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: With high-profile women being touted for nomination in 2008 (including U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice), and a new TV show featuring a female president (ABC’s “Commander in Chief”) soaring in the ratings, the prospect of electing a female president of the United States is looking more possible now than at any time in more than 200 years.
