The Laundry Mat at 320 Monroe Street, St. Charles Missouri
O.K. all you insomniac oppo research wannabes. Here's today's challenge. The above address is shown on various campaign finance reports as home to the following: Thomas Smith, Jr., (I'm assuming this is the same Tom Smith who the tax payers pay more than $50,000 a year to be Tom Dempsey's administrative assistant), Katy Smith, Advisors in Finance, The Republican 2nd Senatorial District Committee, the Republican 12th Legislative District Committee, the Republican 14th Legislative District Committee, the Republican 15th Legislative District Committee, the Republican 16th District Committee, the Republican 17th District Committee, the Republican 18th District Committee, the Republican 19th District Committee, the Republican 23rd Senatorial District Committee, and the Republican 89th District Committee. (Whew!)
See what you can figure out about how crowded it is at 320 Monroe Street. A quick perusal will tell you that Advisors in Finance makes a lot of money off these committees and so does Matt Blunt (on December 29, 2005 he got almost $50,000 from the House on Monroe Street). You will also notice that several of the committees have sequential ethics commission numbers, meaning they were probably all formed on the same day. Looks like an awfully busy laundrymat to me.
The Treasurer or Deputy is Thomas Smith, Jr. for most of them although Jeff Morrison is Treasurer for a couple. Morrison was also Treasurer for People for St. Peter's First, People for Courage and a continuing committee named "Jeff Morrison" (how weird is that, it would look like a contribution from a person on a report, but its actually a continuing committee).

MHDC Payoffs Through 320 Monroe Street
OK, I know I just posted on this, but I have a feeling we are going to have fun playing the six degrees of 320 Monroe Street, so I'm going to get us started with a little story about the Missouri Housing Development Commission. I came upon this just reading a small sample of the reports coming out of the House on Monroe Street.
In August of 2005, a little committee named "Committee for Common Sense Values" in Rolla headed up by anesthesiologist Kevin Snyder received $20,000 from MACO Development Company and $25,000 from various companies at PO Box 1642 Springfield, which happens to be the address of Carlson Gardner Properties.
On December 9, 2005, the Missouri Housing Development Committee, with Sarah Steelman, Peter Kinder and matt Blunt running the show, awarded millions of tax payer dollars to MACO Development and Carlson Gardner properties.
Four days later, on December 13, 2005, the Common Sense Committee transfered $87,500 to the 2nd Senatorial District Committee at -- you guessed it -- 320 Monroe St., St. Charles Missouri.
On December 23, 2005, MHDC Commissioner Steelman's debt service committee got $11,000 from the 2nd District. The rest of the laundry had to spin for another cycle, so on that same day, December 23, 2005, the 2nd Senatorial District at 320 Monroe Street transferred $13,600 to the 14th Leg. Committee at 320 Monroe Street, $13,600 to the 12th Leg. Committee at 320 Monroe Street, $13,600 to the 15th Leg. Committee at 320 Monroe Street, $13,600 to the 16th Leg. Committee at 320 Monroe Street, $13,600 to the 17th (same address), $13,600 to the 19th (same address) and $5400 to the 23rd (same address).
Also on that magical day of December 23, 2005, the 12th Leg. Committee gave Sarah Steelman's Committee $12,100, the 14th gave her Committee $12,100 the 15th gave her committee $12,100 the 16th gave her committee $12,100, the 17th gave her committee $12,100, the 19th gave her $12,100 and the 23rd gave her $3,900. (Did I mention by the way, that they all have the same address and treasurer?).
What, you may ask is the magic number of all of the money given to Sarah Steelman by the 2nd Senatorial District on December 13, plus the money given on laundry day, December 23, 2005. Why, child, it is exactly and precisely the $87,500 figure that Missourians for Common Sense in Ms. Steelman's home town of Rolla sent to the 2nd Congressional district.
But wait, there's more. On December 29th, the 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th gave $12,100 each to the Committee of another MHDC Commissioner, Missourians for Matt Blunt (total of $48,000+). That was a really good month to be both a developer and an MHDC commissioner. I can't find the rest of the money yet, but I bet we will.
