ID for Idiots

I simply want to know why the judicial branch is making laws.

They are only supposed to rule on them not make them

This is a broad general statement

I think the judge ruled prope

I think the judge ruled properly.

GovWatcher may try to make it about a judge letting illegals vote but that is NOT the ruling.

The ruling is to make sure every citizen gets the right to vote. ID is still required

when voting.

Yes, ID is still required when voting, but...

Yes, ID is still required when voting, but what is even more important is that our county clerks are checking to make sure people are actually eligible to vote. I have a concern about that -- that statewide, not all county election officials take that job as seriously as they need to.

County Clerks

I know that the County Clerk and the election volunteers do a very very good job in making sure only legal registered voters, take part in an election.

You're vouching for all County Clerks?

I'm just suggesting that it's something I'm not sure about. You may know YOUR County Clerk, but there are a whole lotta 'em in this state. It's hard for me to let it go because you say that "the County Clerk" does a good job. We're not talking about Robin, we're talking about a whole bunch of Clerks. Yes, they're elected. Yes, they're supposed to follow laws. But maybe Claire should do an audit to make sure they're only registering lawful voters?

I'm not big on these dead-people-voting arguments that come from Republicans, but it seems to me we can do better.

We need to do a better job of getting in front of these issues. We need to be proactive, not reactive, and we must make sure that our voting system is unflawed. I hope no one would disagree with that.

Photo ID Law

Well here we go again, we have another lefty judge deciding that any tom, dick or illegal alien can vote without ID. The damn democrats are going to be the ruin of this Nation!!!!!!

BARF!!!!!!!!

Here's the part you're not getting, GW...

The problem is people move and have 30 days to change their addy on their drivers license...and women change their names when they get hitched and all that official name changing takes time.  As I understand it, people in these situations are going to have problems when they show up and vote, even if they are registered to vote.  That illegal alien stuff is mostly a red herring but the problems of addy and name changing takes time.  When you move or get married, it's not like "Oh, I better make sure I'm eligible to vote" is going to be #1 on your list.  That is simply human nature.  Getting settled into your new abode and getting all the bills and things set up with your new name are going to be a little higher priority.  Yes, getting your voter registration is important but it is still not going to be the be-all and end-all in your life at either of those times. This, in my mind, is why the voter ID issue is important and should just not be dismissed under the nebulous umbrella of personal responsibility.

Dear PudWhacker:

Illegal aliens may not register to vote in the state of Missouri.  Today's decision does nothing to change that.  Judge Callahan's ruling affects only the process by which registered, eligible voters cast their ballots.  Your insistence on trying to make this about illegal aliens --while charming in its own xenophobic, monomaniacal way-- is quite simply misplaced.

Back to your toy border-guard soldiers now, please.

That was not the decision he

That was not the decision he rendered. You may want to actually read it before you comment. Judge Callahan was the former prosecutor for Cole County for over a decade. I doubt the people he prosecuted would consider him a lefty. So here we go again. Someone on the internet who leaps before he looks. "Many a bum show has been saved by the flag." - George M. Cohan

Secretary Carnahan's statement

A Statement from Secretary of State Robin Carnahan

Regarding Photo ID Law Ruling

Jefferson City, MO– Secretary of State Robin Carnahan released the following statement today:

“I am pleased with Judge Callahan’s ruling to stop the photo ID law, signed in June by Governor Blunt, from going into effect for the November election.  This ruling affirms my concern that the law clearly jeopardizes the constitutional voting rights of many Missourians.

As Missouri's chief elections official, it's my job to ensure fair elections, and elections cannot be fair if eligible voters are not allowed to vote.”
