From Mark Morris of the the Kansas City Star, "Former ACORN worker pleads guilty in voter fraud case": [1]

A former voter registration worker for a community organization pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to filing false paperwork with the Kansas City election board.

Carmen R. Davis, 38, was charged in January with committing voter registration fraud and identity theft before the November elections.

The charges against her and three other former ACORN workers have become a national issue. Some allege that the indictments are part of a political effort to suppress minority voter turnout.

Interim U.S. Attorney Bradley Schlozman brought the charges less than a week before the election. Prosecutors later dropped charges against one defendant, whose identity had been stolen by the actual culprit, they said. Davis subsequently was indicted.

Earlier this week, Dale D. Franklin, who pleaded guilty in February to filing false voter registrations, received probation. Brian Gardner pleaded guilty in March and is awaiting sentencing. Kwaim A. Stenson is set for trial in July.

Dale D. Franklin received probation. He could have been sent to federal prison for 5 years, but the Justice Department gave him probation. He now has a federal record, because on a hot fall day he made a stupid mistake.

Franklin has pleaded guilty. He told the truth when it mattered.

Here is my truth: I never met these four. Yet I handed over the evidence to get them convicted. I'm not sorry I did that. I did the right thing, yet I still feel I need to make amends.

They got caught in the crossfire of the Kansas City Voting Rights Massacre. Were they innocent? No, it seems they forged some signatures to get a day labor wage of $8/hour.

Justice, I love the idea of justice, but sometimes I want mercy instead. Justice scares me (as it should). Grace is the Christian response to the narrow interpretation of the law. Jesus condemned the lawyers and the hypocrites.

George W. Bush once said that Jesus Christ was his favorite political philosopher. With all due respect, Mr. President. I think you need to go back to the Book. I'm not going to cite any scripture references, because you know them. Pick up your Bible and read. And then pray.

What will you do then? Don't just ask for forgivness, think about a pardon. I think the ACORN 4 might not deserve that, but perhaps your soul might.
