Blunt outsourcing state milk safety inspections to... milk distributors
Last June, Matt Blunt took tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from individuals affiliated with the Dairy Farmers of America, a large milk marketing organization with offices in Kansas City.
Now comes word that the Blunt Administration is providing a five year, no-bid contract to DFA to conduct "state" safety testing on the milk it sells.
Only Matt Blunt would pay a fox to guard the hen house a marketer to tell the public its product is safe.

More than milk
The Missouri Department of Agriculture, which is the state's premier consumer protection agency, has been decimated during the current administration. While the State Milk Board is a separate entity from MDA, the two are closely joined.
I'd be very interested in what other cuts have been made to the various programs that support consumers -- food safety, meat inspection, weights and measures and grain inspection.
Many of these areas are funded through fee funds that support the regulation. (Which industry often recognizes is the best investment that they can make in supporting fairness and industry-wide quality.)
When the Blunt Administration realizes that reducing state employess (or their internal and political goal of maintaining less than 70,000 state employees) is less important than protecting comsumers, we'll all be better off.
I'm not holding my breath.

After industry fundraiser, Blunt proposed firing milk inspectors
After his milk industry fundraiser, Blunt proposed firing milk inspectors in his budget, but didn't mention that he would outsource the "state" milk safety inspections to the industry.
