Post-Dispatch Article Underscores the Importance of Race

In Sunday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch the editorial board for the election of Rep. Rick Johnson to send a clear message that we will not stand for these immoral cuts. The same editorial criticized Republican senators for voting to slash Medicaid. The editorial states, “In Jefferson County, where a state Senate seat is open, the state Republican Party is dumping money into a misleading TV ad campaign to brand candidate Rick Johnson of High Ridge, as a "tax-and-spend Democrat." The Republican ads avoid mentioning the 1,673 people in Jefferson County who would lose health care benefits under the Blunt proposal.” Despite the money be spent against him, Rep. Rick Johnson is confident that the people of Jefferson county will not let the Republicans buy this State Senate seat. “The people of Jefferson County care too much about their retirement security to let another Republican go in and slash Medicaid. I am confident the people of Jefferson County will send me to protect their retirement security.” Rick Johnson is the Democrat in the April 5, 2005 22nd State Senatorial elections. Sen. Edwards Joins Johnson in Jefferson County

Former Senator John Edwards (D-North Carolina) will be joining Representative Rick Johnson (D-High Ridge) for an event on Sunday April 3, 2005. The event will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 P.M. at Fox High School in Arnold, MO. Johnson is running for the State Senate in the 22nd Senatorial District in the April 5, 2005 Special Election. “John Edwards’ support means a lot to me because he understands the importance of programs like Social Security and Medicaid. With these programs at stake, this election has become vital to the future of Missouri, and having Edwards’ support is a strong endorsement of my plans to protect our retirement security,” remarked Johnson. “Rick Johnson has been fighting for Missouri his whole life and we need more leaders like him who will put seniors first. I want to do everything I can to help him get elected to the State Senate and I’m looking forward to coming to Missouri to campaign with him,” Edwards added. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and seating is limited. For ticket information please contact the campaign office. The event will be handicap accessible and special seating will be reserved for individuals with special needs. For directions to the event or for more information, please contact the Johnson campaign office.

Alter Campaign Turns to Personal Attacks and Distortions

In the race for the 22nd State Senate seat, Republican Bill Alter has begun airing a television advertisement unfairly attacking Rep. Rick Johnson (D-High Ridge) and his family. The ad falsely accuses Johnson and his family of owing back taxes. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said, ”… the ad deceptively cites legislation Johnson supported that would not have increased taxes...” “I expected Alter to attack me with distortions but it is unacceptable to include my wife in these attacks. I believe that this campaign will come down to the issues facing Jefferson County and not outrageous accusations. My campaign has been the only one to present a plan for the future of Jefferson County, while the Republicans are focusing on personal attacks on me and my family,” noted Johnson. Furthermore, the Alter campaign has attempted to distort its own position with an automated telephone call. The call claims that Alter opposes cuts to Medicaid, while he is on record as saying he supports the Governor’s cuts to the program. In contrast, Rick Johnson has focused his campaign on critical issues facing the state such as the privatization of Social Security and the proposed elimination of Medicaid. In an ad that begins airing tomorrow, Johnson reiterates his opposition in plans to undercut our retirement security. “Being raised by a single mother struggling to provide for her family, I understand the importance of programs like Social Security and Medicaid. We have made a commitment to the generation before us and if we go back on it now, thousands of seniors will suffer,” added Johnson.

Rick Johnson

Here is a Letter to the Editor that I wrote that was published in the Jefferson County Journal on 3/23:

To the Editor:

In the upcoming special election for the 22nd district Mo. State Senate seat, the Republican candidate Bill Alter has easily and incredibly amassed a $750,000 war chest.  And with the never ending money mill funded by the influence peddling lobbyists that are firmly entrenched around Gov. Matt Blunt – Alter can readily procure much, much more.

What could the Republican Party possibly stand to gain by pumping this unprecedented amount of money into the campaign of Bill Alter?
Anyone who witnessed the performance of Mr. Alter during the March 4th candidate’s forum at Jefferson College would be hard pressed to find a single intelligible answer to any question posed to Alter – and these were pre-screened questions (a pre-requisite demanded by his campaign staff).

In a direct and stark contrast, Rep. Rick Johnson answered each of his questions intelligently, thoughtfully and articulately.  Johnson’s vision, decency and passion to serve the 22nd district were evident.  His record as a state representative is a proven, solid one of working for the common good of all the people in his district; protecting the disadvantaged, the elderly and the best interests of the middle class.

In addition to bankrolling a moral victory for the Republican Party by installing a GOP senator into a historically Democratic stronghold – the real reason for their zeal to place this empty suit into the Senate is to insure one more helpful hand to aid in Gov. Blunt’s systematic destruction of each and every safety net, lifeline, and regulatory protection that lower and middle income Missourians have depended on for the last fifty years.

The residents of the 22nd district need to look no further than the cruel and indecent cuts called for by Governor Blunt to decide which candidate would best serve their interests and needs.  Rick Johnson’s record, integrity and service should speak for itself on April 5th.

Rick Johnson gets Post Dispatch Endorsement

'...In the 22nd District, four candidates are vying for the seat formerly held by Democrat Steve Stoll, who resigned in January. The best choice is Richard K. "Rick" Johnson, 35, a lawyer from High Ridge. Since 2001, Mr. Johnson has served northern Jefferson County in the Missouri House, where he was minority leader in 2003-2004. He is a strong advocate of increased education and transportation funding, closing loopholes that increase the tax burden on middle-class taxpayers and improving access to quality health care for all Missourians. He calls Mr. Blunt's Medicaid cuts "devastating."...'

Republicans Discriminate At Rally

According to Joe Harris in the Jefferson County Journal, the disabled are not welcome at Bill Alter's events. The republicans recently held a rally and kicked out anyone who was with the Disabled Resource Association. I guess taking away their Mediaid wasn't mean enough for the republicans, they have to be overtly discriminate too.

Just what was Bill Alter afraid of?

"Upon arriving at the [Alter]rally...a group of approximately 12 people [from the Disability Resource Association (DRA) of Crystal City} was promptly asked to leave by campaign officials. After discussing the matter, Henning said the group was allowed back in, but only if they agreed not to ask Alter any questions."

I've noticed Alter has basically nothing about health care on his website.  http://www.alterforsenate.com/issues.html

Jefferson County Democrats

I have heard a lot recently about Jefferson County becoming more conservative.

Although it is true that the electorate there has changed and we may have lost some ground, 2004 election results show that Jeff Co is still firmly ours.  We just need to put in more resources to keep it and grow it.

All of the Democratic statewide candidates:  McCaskill, Cook, Robin Carnahan, Powell, and Nixon won in Jefferson County in November 2004.

All seven state representative seats were won or retained by Democrats (and only one of the seven ran unopposed)

In 2002, Steve Stoll handily won reelection to the 22nd Senatorial seat by 20% of the votes.  And Jean Carnahan firmly won in Jefferson County despite narrowly losing statewide.

Democrats need to stay fired up to keep what is still Democratic turf.

Let's keep the 22nd Senate seat a DEMOCRATIC seat.
