The GOP Gag-a-Maggot Contest
by Jean Carnahan

The one-upmanship in the GOP primary ranges from hilarious to scary.  At one extreme, Giuliani told a Hispanic mega-church that he was not there for their votes, but for their prayers.  I hoped there were barf bags in the back of the pews for those who couldn’t stomach such obvious political pandering.

Then, Huckabee told a Michigan audience that he wants to correct the work of the Founding Fathers.  For reasons—unknown to the Arkansas preacher—they neglected to reference God in the Constitution.  He wants to amend the document to bring it up to what he believes to be “God’s standards,” which just happen to match his own political persuasion.  Correcting the omission would send a signal to the Almighty that we are, indeed, a godly people.

Poor Huck, to have gone to Bible school, he learned so little.  Inserting God’s name alongside a political agenda is not how the faith was meant to be shared.

We are to be the gospel, that is, we are to reflect in our lives the goodness of God, not try to impose our interpretation of His will by mandate.

Huckabee’s latest blunder may well seal his fate.  He is beginning to make Romney and McCain seem rational.  Hopefully, there are enough voters who feel that the U.S. Constitution should be tamper-proof or, at least, not subject to the whims of the latest religious zealots.

As the Rev. Huckabee should recall from Theology 101, God dwells not in the things made by the hand of man, but within the hearts and lives of those who love and serve Him.
