Why I Support Barack Obama

Why I Support Barack Obama

Barack Obama is the president we need now.

His message of hope and change speaks to people all across America, regardless of race, age, gender or political party.

We are at a moral crossroads in American history—one requiring a dramatic change of direction if we intend to repair the damage inflicted on our nation during the last eight years.  The Bush administration has left us with a frayed Constitution, a divided country, plummeting respect abroad, and an ailing planet.  Our economy teeters on the brink of recession, while we pursue an intractable war that allows Exxon and Halliburton to post record profits.

Sen. Obama wrote: "This is our moment to renew the trust and faith of our people—and all people—in an America that battles immediate evils, promotes an ultimate good, and leads the world once more."

By electing a president who embodies the spirit of a new century, we would send a bold signal—one that captures the imagination of the rest of the world and rallies our nation to new and lofty goals.

I recall the days of World War II—though I realize most of my readers do not.  We were one in purpose, inspired to the task, and willing to sacrifice at every level for the common good.   FDR instilled those feeling within us as a people.  We overcame incredible odds, because we believed in the goodness of America and the possibilities of our people.  I believe that Barack Obama can do the same at this juncture in our nation’s history.

Americans are a-thirst for leadership that inspires the “better angels” within us.  We are ready for a president who is able to end the longest war in our history, mend our wounded spirit, and rouse us to greatness again.

Fortunately, Obama is more than a powerful symbol of the New America that must be.  He is sincere, intelligent and well-spoken man—a man daring enough to grasp the future by the horns and not let go.   And, he has demonstrated judgment and passion in dealing with issues facing ordinary Americans.

I like what he’s saying about health care, Social Security, education, and the economy.  He favors a phased re-deployment in Iraq, a tax policy that lessens the burden on the middle-class; a sensible health care plan; and an energy policy that promotes renewable power.  Most important, he has the ability to bring people together to achieve those goals.

Barack Obama is the antidote to George Bush.  He is bright, brave, and believable.  He is the president we need now to bridge our differences and restore our moral authority in the world.
