Position: Grassroots Organizer
Location: Overland Park, Administrative Office
Primary Responsibility: Grassroots Organizer for Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri serving the Kansas City area. Responsible for grassroots efforts to organize empower and mobilize supporters to take action in support of Planned Parenthood's mission. Implement strategies and programs developed by the public affairs department. Responsible for forming and supporting teams of activists in targeted geographic areas who will become informed on local, state and national reproductive health issues and take other actions to further the public affairs goals of PPKM. Work closely with the Director of Public Affairs, the director of the statewide project and other members of the Planned Parenthood public affairs team, provide guidance to volunteers, interns and practicum students working on projects for which the organizer is responsible, and assist in administrative duties, fundraising and special events.
Position Status: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, non-exempt
Responsible To: Director of Public Affairs
Required skills: Bachelor’s degree in Political or Social Sciences or equivalent experience in a related field, excellent writing and verbal communication skills, and knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office/Word, the Internet, and relational databases. Activities for this position include:
• Assist in developing and implementing PPKM’s portion of the statewide grassroots and legislative organizing plan.
• Conduct grassroots pro-choice and pro-Planned Parenthood organizing in legislative districts, on campuses, at public events, etc.
• Recruit, train and mobilize volunteers as needed to carry out PPKM’s grassroots organizing plan.
• Assist in setting and implementing PPKM activist development goals, and provide monthly progress reports to the Statewide Director of Organizing.
• Assist with the education and mobilization of PPKM clients. Special emphasis is placed on client involvement in action teams.
• Generate new donors to PPKM through organizing, outreach and special event efforts.
• Coordinate and implement Planned Parenthood sponsored lobby days, legislative activities, rallies, and media events.
• Keep action teams and other volunteers informed of all local, state, and national legislation and public policies that affect PPKM.
• Using in-person, email, mail and other methods of communication, keep action teams and other volunteers apprised of their elected officials’ positions and voting records.
• Interact with pro-choice coalitions and other pro-choice organizations to implement pro-choice strategies.
• Maintain/update activist database and produce reports as needed.
Preferred skills: Experience in organizing/advocacy work or related area.
