About the Organization
Trailnet is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization with a 20-year history of Promoting
Active Living as a way of life that encourages people to integrate physical activity
into their daily routines. Trailnet leads in fostering healthy and active communities
through innovative programs, planning, and policy that promote walking and
bicycling throughout the St. Louis bi-state region.
General Summary
Trailnet has a long history of promoting Bike to Work Day in the St. Louis Area. The
objective of the Travel Green Intern position is to transform Trailnet’s Bike to Work
Day efforts into a year-round initiative to increase the number of community
residents who bike to work or use alternative transportation. The Travel Green
Intern will assist with coordinating our efforts to promote and implement Bike to
Work Day efforts and work with local employers to pilot a Travel Green program.
We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about alternative transportation
and wishes to implement evidence-based approaches to achieve behavior change
resulting in more people biking to work or using alternative transportation.
Candidates should have a good understanding of the relationship of the built
environment and public health and have a high degree of comfort with bike
commuting. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills with a knack for
detail and organization, and experience in event coordination. Excellent written and
verbal communication skills are also required.
Responsibilities
Assist in coordinating Bike to Work Day planning efforts along with Trailnet staff
and local groups, government agencies, transit agencies, employers and other key
stakeholders.
Work with Trailnet staff to produce Bike to Work Day/ Travel Green promotional
and educational materials.
• Develop expertise in the new bike commuting fringe benefit law and develop
step-by-step guide for employers to adopt
• Provide small scale positive cycling experiences for novice bike commuters,
develop workplace cycling challenge programs and data collection systems
• Employ evidence based methods to increase use of alternative transportation
• Write content for the Bike to Work Day/ Travel Green pages of the Trailnet
website
• Develop and implement bike commuter education sessions and or identify
recommended resources for same
• Solicit donations for give-aways, cash sponsorships and prizes
• Assist with other tasks related to the Travel Green program including phone
calls, data entry, mailings, running errands throughout the St. Louis Metro Area
• Advocate for healthy and active communities
• Support travel green/ alternative transportation efforts within Community
Services Department including Safe Routes to School, Bike Walk Master Plans
and Healthy and Active Communities Initiative
Required
• Bachelors in any field
• Must be comfortable interfacing with a wide variety of stakeholders
• Must be comfortable facilitating meetings, public speaking and marketing the
program.
• Enthusiasm about bicycling
Qualifications
• Ability to manage a large project with many components and multiple contacts
• Excellent writing skills
• Ability to think strategically, including systems-thinking, resource-based
planning, and long-term initiative development
• Ability to work independently and manage self and partners toward goals, while
being a genuine “team playerâ€
• Ability to work in a fast moving and at times intense environment; ability to
work with fast-paced colleagues
Compensation
Compensation is at a rate of $10/ hour at 10-15 hours a week for a total of 300
hours. Work environment includes flexible hours, casual work environment, office
located in downtown St. Louis, a short walk from Metrolink. Company car available
for some business related local and regional travel.
