Kinder says he's being bribed to assist the record number of unemployed, promises to help as little as possible

Responding to new mass layoffs and the highest jobless rate in 25 years, Missouri Republicans have promised to refuse $133 million allocated in the economic recovery package to help the state pay for unemployment benefits. Why? Because (gasp) it would require helping more unemployed people. You know, those underserving types in job training programs, who left their jobs for family reasons, who have children and prospective part-time workers.

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder says that's all a "bribe" from the federal government to help the people who've lost work, and he's promised to fight any attempts to expand the safety net for Missouri's unemployed.  Other Republicans at the press conference with Kinder said the record-high unemployment makes it "absolutely inappropriate" to help the record-number of unemployed, because it would require some actual work from the legislature.

Again, I just don't understand the logic behind the GOP's refusal to help the people struggling in this economic crisis. Money from the federal government has already been allocated for the unemployment assistance. People who receive unemployment benefits need every dime to survive, and will reinvest every dime they receive back into the economy.  People are struggling now, and this sort of GOP grandstanding is not going to help anyone.
