Reaping What Has Been Sown

Via Taegan Goddard's blog at CQ Politics, it looks like less than half of Republicans think Obama is an American citizen. This may be a result of all those "legitimate questions" GOP leaders keep talking about.

The Politico's Glenn Thrush puts two and two together:

A whopping 58 percent of Republicans either think Barack Obama wasn't born in the US (28 percent) or aren't sure (30 percent). A mere 42 percent think he was.

That means a majority of Republicans polled either don't know about -- or don't believe the seemingly incontrovertible evidence Obama's camp has presented over and over and over that he was born in Hawaii in '61.

It also explains why Republicans, including Roy Blunt, are playing footsie with the Birther fringe.

In related developments, Roy Blunt's "legitimate" concerns were featured on The Rachel Maddow Show again last night (h/t Jo Mannies).

Note that the legislation for McCain Maddow references early in the clip was sponsored by Sen. Claire McCaskill, among others.

And in one last bit of birther news, Orly Taitz, the birther lawyer for State Reps. Tim Jones and Cynthia Davis, filed a new batch of documents in federal court yesterday after serving their complaint to the United States of America, VP Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Robert Gates.
