Even in the midst of a difficult budget situation of Republican provenance, at least one GOP legislator in a critical committee position has some curious ideas about how taxpayer bucks should be spent.
According to reports, Senate Appropriations Chair Gary Nodler plans on pressing ahead during the 2009 legislative session with a scheme by which the state would pay to commission painted portraits of Appropriations Committee Chairmen, starting with him, and which would then hang in perpetuity in Senate Committee Room 2 in the state capitol. Just what Missouri taxpayers have been clamoring for.
The fact that, following Matt Blunt's single term in the governor's mansion, Missouri faces a budget shortfall of more than $300 million is apparently lost on Nodler. Perhaps he missed the dozens of news stories about the budget crisis while he was playing make-believe and having doormen fling open the senate doors and announce him to an empty chamber?Â

Here's Nodler

Call Me, Gary
Hell, I''ll come take his pitcher for nothin' on my ol' Polaroid. I don't trust them artist fellows none. They do a lot of cover up work. My photos will make you come out sharp and bright and lookin' like you really is. Painting are just puttin' lipstick on a pig.
One More Thing I Forgot
You say these guys want to be "hung in Perpetuity." Where the Sam Hill is "Perpetuity???" I can't find it on the map. I say hang 'em in the Capitol where they deserve to be hung.
Maybe he can just sit behind a picture frame at hearings
Offer to Paint Portraits FREE
I have a niece who is an art teacher in Alabama. When she read this post she called and said that the middle-school art teachers are looking for a project and might be interested in painting the legislators just for the cost of the oil and canvass. I told her that they would probably be using Missouri artists, but she would still like to make a proposal. Where should she write?
Never!!
I don't think we should outsource this art project. Certainly not to some backward dumbass state like Alabama. There's nothing they'd rather do than to paint our hardworking public servants as jerks. If our lawmakers want to be jerks they can do it without any outside help.
Nodler Will Hang Alone
I see now that this is not a very big project after all. It does not include the portraiture of his colleagues, who formerly held the venerable position of Appropriations Chair. It starts with HIM! I think it would be a lot less self-serving if it started with his successor--the sooner the better.
I Need a Job
Is this a no-bid expenditure or a contest? Just wanted to know if I should apply. I am currently out of work but I draw pretty good.
