Fired Up! Missouri http://www.firedupmissouri.com en Fired Up! Archives http://www.firedupmissouri.com/content/fired-archives
From 2005-2012, Fired Up! Missouri shined a light on principled, hard-working, fair-minded public servants -- and turned up the heat on mean-spirited, self-righteous, close-minded, divisive, irresponsible, loud-mouthed, fear-mongering politicians. We've pressed the pause button on new content for the website now as our team pursues new adventures in the Show-Me State and beyond, but stay tuned....
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 00:16:56 +0000 Support 16010 at http://www.firedupmissouri.com GRO Presses Senator Blunt to Act By March 1st to Avert Massive Service Cuts http://www.firedupmissouri.com/content/gro-presses-senator-blunt-act-march-1st-avert-massive-service-cuts
GRO - Grass Roots Organizing, state partner of Americans for Tax Fairness, caught up with Senator Roy Blunt late yesterday afternoon on his way to speak about the potential impact of sequestration at the International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine. GRO urged the Senator to protect Head Start pre-school, public safety, mental health services and job training by closing corporate tax loopholes and limiting tax breaks for the rich.

The group’s impromptu greeting for the Senator is linked to the Feb 20th national day of action in 18 states urging Congress to avert $85 billion in arbitrary, across-the-board cuts in everything from mental health services to public safety scheduled to take effect March 1st. GRO called on Senator Blunt to eliminate tax loopholes for the richest 2 percent and make big corporations pay in order to stop the cuts.

“It’s crazy for Congress to let big corporations use huge tax loopholes to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, while middle-class and vulnerable Americans pay the price. The cuts will be devastating, from thousands of teachers being laid off to delayed Social Security checks and hits to mental health and job training programs for our troops coming home from war. Instead of more cuts that hurt average Missourians and create greater burdens for our state, Congress should close tax loopholes for the rich and corporations, so we can protect these critical investments and services for working families,” said Robin Acree, Executive Director of GRO - Grass Roots Organizing.

BACKGROUND:

Unless Congress acts to avert it by March 1st, $85 billion in arbitrary, automatic federal cuts—called a sequester—will result in the loss of 750,000 jobs nationwide, according to the Congressional Budget Office, and threaten the economic security of many middle class and vulnerable Americans. Meanwhile, the CBO projects sequestration would cut economic growth in 2013 by half. For a complete list of immediate cuts visit: http://1.usa.gov/14YOFmd.

Arbitrary cuts can easily be averted if the super wealthy and big corporations are asked to pay their fair share. About half the cuts alone can be prevented if Congress were to enact the “Buffett Rule,” which would require that people who make at least $2 million a year pay a 30% minimum tax – just slightly above the tax bracket of millions of middle-class Americans. This would raise $54 billion or nearly two-thirds of the scheduled across-the-board cuts on March 1.

Wed, 20 Feb 2013 16:34:01 +0000 General Content 16004 at http://www.firedupmissouri.com Today's Assigned Reading From Sen. While they are still terrible bills which should never be passed in to law, it is good that they will be heard at a time when the public has the opportunity to attend.

Also, check out Secretary of State Jason Kander's statement:

“There is no reason that a public hearing of the Missouri House of Representatives should be held at 6:45 a.m. It is not open and honest government, and it creates an unnecessary hardship for Missourians interested in testifying on the legislation or just listening to the hearing,” Kander said. “Hearings should always be held at easily accessible times for Missourians, especially when dealing with legislation as controversial and complicated as these proposals. The committee should change the timing of this hearing to allow Missourians to more easily be a part of the legislative process.”

-------------------------------------------------------

Missouri House republicans are terrified that someone might actually want to attend a hearing on disenfranchising tens of thousands of Missouri voters by requiring restrictive voter ID laws, so they've scheduled the committee hearings of those bills for 6:45AM in an effort to keep voting rights advocates from attending.

Pretty audacious if you ask me. Not everyone agrees with my stance on firearms in our country, but I strongly feel that word needs to be spread regarding the importance of this American freedom. I have serious concerns regarding the preservation of our free country — we must ensure our constitutional rights are passed on to our children and grandchildren.

Since the tragic school shooting in Connecticut, many individuals have expressed to me that there should be further restrictions on weapons that are specifically designed to hold several rounds of ammunition or have a military-like appearance. I’ve also heard from individuals all across the board who say we should “give in,” or compromise regarding gun control. Though I respect the opinions of my fellow Missourians, I firmly believe we have a solid right to own firearms, and it should be Missourians’ preference as to how many firearms they own.

Allow me to explain. Our Founding Fathers were very clear as to why they thought Americans should own weapons. If individuals would collectively take a short amount of time to actually research what our Founding Fathers stated about gun ownership and control, they would see that what many arbitrarily refer to as “assault rifles” would fit squarely with what our Founding Fathers wanted us to possess. Keep in mind, our country’s first leaders had just escaped tyranny and experienced firsthand the consequences of a power-hungry government. Our Founding Fathers knew that unarmed people become “subjects,” while people who are free to protect themselves are “citizens.” They knew that government, by its very nature, would continually seek more power and that it had an insatiable hunger for more of our money and our liberty. Our great leaders wanted American citizens to be free to protect themselves from, God forbid, a tyrannical government.

Now, am I afraid our government will become an absolute dictatorship in my lifetime? No; however, I do understand the very nature of government, and a tyrannical government could someday be possible. As American citizens, we must guard today what we want tomorrow, and therefore, we can never allow government to take even one small step further in the direction of restricting citizens’ right to own firearms.

Individuals may argue that my position is old-fashioned and doesn’t apply to modern times, and although I disagree, here is a more “modern” reason why our Second Amendment Rights are vital to us now. You may or may not be familiar with the absolute financial crisis — no, emergency — our country is in, but I'm acutely aware. We are living in a time when it is possible for the American dollar to lose its standing as the international medium of exchange.

As it stands right now, countries have to buy and sell on the international market using U.S. dollars — this means when countries buy oil from OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries), they use U.S. currency. I could go into lengthy detail to explain all the aspects of how America, as we know it, could literally cease to exist if we lose the coveted position the U.S. dollar currently holds as the international medium of exchange. However, I will say this: the America you are accustomed to would no longer exist, and it is possible (even likely) that we could become weakened to the point of inviting an invading army. If that were to ever occur, and I pray it doesn't, I want an AR-15 in every closet of every house in America. Some Missourians do not believe this situation would happen, and I fervently pray they are correct. I fail to receive comfort in believing that the weakening of our nation could never happen, and I would feel much better if American citizens were armed.

Gun control laws empower the government by making the people weak and encourage criminals because they have no regard for what the law states. Increased gun control would disarm the innocent and weaken those who follow the law. I want all my constituents and loved ones to know that I will never back down, not even one inch, on the subject of gun control, and I will fight any measure in the Legislature that further restricts our God-given right to defend ourselves. Gun control is not about guns — it’s about control.

I appreciate you reading this important Capitol Report, and please stay tuned to the imperative discussions we will have in the upper chamber throughout the 2013 legislative session.
