Reasons more change is needed at Three Rivers Community College

It looks as if an “anonymous tip” has caused the NJCAA to examine the booster club and basketball program at TRCC.  If there is a problem that is further proof the leadership at TRCC has got to go!

How much does Three Rivers Community College pay their attorneys?

The incumbent members of the Three Rivers Community College are boasting they spend $1,000,000 dollars of the college's $17,000,000 budget (5.9%) on athletics.

While this figure may be disputed, the incumbents who are running the college into the ground seem to suddenly have amnesia when asked, "How much does Three Rivers Community College spend on attorneys' and legal fees?"

When asked for copies of the budget under the sunshine law the board members suddenly seem to get angry.

Push Poll on the Missouri Plan

Just got off the phone with Opinion Access Corporation (Long Island, New York). They're conducting a push poll on the Missouri Plan for selecting judges. Numerous leading questions about public involvement, sunshine laws and the death penalty. They follow up by requesting info on voting freuqency, income, religion, etc. Sounds more like targeted marketing. I called the president of Opinion Access, Jim Hoffman, and left a message asking him to call me with information about who hired them. Needless to say I'm not holding my breath.  Story Continued »

SHOULD MISSOURI APOLOGIZE FOR SLAVERY?

Earlier this year St. Louis Rep. El-Amin introduced and Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton co-sponsored legislation that would require Missouri to apologize for slavery.

Do you think the State of Missouri should apologize for slavery? Or do you think requiring the State of Missouri to apologize for slavery will bring more harm to race relations?

Taum Sauk Distractions

Fourteen months ago, the citizenry was up in arms over the destruction of Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park by the failure of the Upper Taum Sauk reservoir. On the 5th of February, Ameren made official what some have suspected for some time--they intend to rebuild the reservoir.Ameren news release
Instead of focusing attention on the engineering of this project, the media is spilling all their ink on the Jefferson City sideshow of Blunt-Nixon et al and changes of venue for the lawsuit (lawsuits?) and what the state wants from Ameren, and what they are likely to get--while little to no progress is being made at remediating the park, informing the public about the specifics of the rebuild proposal. Local Reynolds county sources are doing a better job of reporting what is happening on the ground than the big city dailies.
Black River News
How do we refocus the major media on the important part of this story, and off of the fellows in clown suits? After all, even if the campground is moved, people are still going to (hopefully someday) be picnicking and swimming in that East Fork valley again.

A Layman’s Look at …The Minimum Wage

 Layman’s Look atThe   Minimum Wage

The federal minimum wage standard is a joke.  $5.15 per hour is slave wages in this country, especially when many of our business CEOs are millionaires.  Our members of Congress approve THEIR own pay raises minimally every two years. One adult making $5.15 per hour, a 40 hour week X 52 weeks = $10,712.00 annually, and that’s before federal/state taxes, Medicare and Social Security deductions.

How many people who read this, are willing to work for this disgusting and ridiculous rate of pay?  I venture to say, that no one here would.  How can an average “minimum pay” worker improve themselves when the rate of inflation has surpassed the basics of living! They just don’t get it!  Higher wages would spur more spending, lessen the dollar amount of Earned Income Credit qualifiers, and increase all tax bases, including Social Security. “Tax cuts” are not the answer to a striving economy.

The last Minimum Wage increase was in 1997.  That was almost ten years ago!  I suppose the rate of inflation has not increased since then?  This is another sign/symptom that Congress is totally out of touch with their constituents.  “Big businesses of America” should be our country’s political title, since that seems to be the true unification of country and Congress.

Who Made America?

Who Made America?

The United States of America was founded by people of diverse culture. The Statue of Liberty is our physical symbol of welcoming foreigners to our land. The forefathers of some of us left their country of origin, to pursue a better life for themselves and their children. Others, were forced to enter our country by the provisions of slavery, and still others being native to this land, were all but exterminated to a much fewer number.

However today, we see and hear opposing views of the immigration of our Mexican and other Central American neighbors. Why have we become less welcoming? Their presence here in the good ole U.S., is another contribution to the “Melting Pot” that we once “prided” ourselves. I contend that these hard-working folks have just as much right to reside here as citizens, as with our ancestors.

Our Mid Eastern friends have much to offer also. Their religions and cultures are their contribution to this country.

“Give us your hungry and poor” was our plea to people of diversity and victims of persecution then…why not now? Conformity to the majority seems to be the commandment in today’s political and religious circles. “If you’re not with us, you’re against us.” is a common quote made by these supremacists.

Interchanging of, and the exchange of cultures and religious beliefs are the make-up of the United States. Sometimes we need to reflect on the “forward thinking” that our founding fathers opened the door to this ideology. Diversity should be viewed as a positive role in our society. Like it or not, we’re growing as a nation! We need to adapt to change and adopt a more open-minded view.

Why do some of us view cultural change as threatening? It was change that formed this “land of opportunity”.

Why 76% of Missourians did the right thing on Nov. 7

The New York Times quells the fears of those Chicken Littles who try to tell us the sky will fall if workers are paid decent wages. It focuses on $7.93/hr. Washington state where, in a condition unfamiliar to Missourians under Matt Blunt’s “pro-business” Missouri, 90,000 jobs were added to the economy last year.
